The Guatapé Rock!

What: El Peñón de Guatapé

Where: Antioquia, Colombia.

When: Always

Info:

El Peñón (the rock) which is wrongly referred to as El Peñol (the stone) is a monolithic formation located in the Columbian town of Guatapé.

The rock has a colourful history including its worship by the areas original inhabitants - The Tahamies Indians.

In 1940 the Columbian Government declared the rock a ‘National Monument’.

The first climbing of the rock took place in 1954!

Apparently there was a discovery of a new species of plant in top of the rock the Pitcairma heterophila- although these reports are vague! (I call bullshit!)

And to top it all off there was a ‘war’ of ownership between the residents of the towns - Guatapé and El Peñol. The sneaky residents of Guatapé decided to settle the matter by painting the town’s name on the rock in huge white letters. (Good idea guys)! It did not take long for the residents of El Peñol to notice Guatapés mischievousness, and a large mob was assembled to stop it. Only the “G” and part of the “U” were completed on the northern face.

To get to the top you need to climb a spiral concrete staircase which is located inside the monolitic rock and it consists of 694 steps! When you get to the top you can enjoy the look out from the interesting ‘castle’ lookout located on top  as well as by postcards + local wares.

Sounds like fun to me!
